WGC Dell Technologies Match Play 2017

WGC Dell Technologies Match Play 2017This week begins the 2017 World Golf Championship Match Play event in Austin Texas.  The bracket show was held last night and drew the respective groupings for this years event.  Some very interesting match-ups will occur during the group stage in which each golfer will play 3 match play events to decide who advances from each of the 16 groups.  Each of the top 16 seeded professional golfers are the “top” seed in each of the 16 groupings, and then golfers from the next tiers are randomly selected to fill out each group.  This eliminates the chance of having very top or bottom heavy groupings, but also provides a level of randomness to each group.  Now that the groupings are set, and the brackets are being filled in, the fun starts with all of the discussions and arguments about which professional golfer will move on to knock-out stage of the match play event.  We’re looking forward to watching the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play 2017 event this year.

I was on the course yesterday, and the course is mostly setup similar to last years event.  However, on Hole #8, the back tee has been opened up to be used this year, adding about 12-15 yards to the hold and making it a very long par 4 at 498 yards.  Yesterday’s practice round had the wind blowing into the players teeing off, and the all tee shots were hit with drivers, and all landed in the 280-295 landing zone before the steep decline.  Last year, everyone but a select few short hitters, were bombing drivers over the trees and landing on the down slope resulting in drives reaching 360+ yards and making a long par 4 into a drive and wedge.  This year will be MUCH different on hole #8 and should include a long iron or hybrid going into the green.  This will remove some advantage for the long hitters and make this a much more daunting hole.
