Final Day Recap of the Phoenix Open

It was an exciting finish at the 2015 Phoenix Open with the crowing of a Brooks Koepka as the winner, with his first PGA tour victory.  If you are not familiar with Koepka, he is a young talent that has tremendous power, and recently won the Turkish Open on the European Tour a couple of months ago.  Like I mentioned in my Day 3 Recap, it is exciting to see so much young talent in golf – Rory McIlroy won in Dubai this week too!

Martin Laird was tied with Koepka going to the 17th hole, and Laird tried to drive the green at the short par 4.  He blocked the shot way right, which required a very difficult second shot to get close.  He had to rely on a long putt for birdie, but worse, it was a difficult two putt for par.  In the end, Laird 3 putted and bogeyed the hole.  Koepka’s drive on the 17th easily reached the green, and almost went too far as it just hung up on the red line of the hazard inches from the water.  Because he couldn’t ground the club, the chip shot came up quite a bit short, but was still an easy par.  After the 17th hole, it was just a matter of not hitting the tee-shot into the water on the 18th hole for Koepka to finish the tournament off.  That didn’t seem to be a problem at all, and he crushed his drive to the middle of the fairway for a fairly easy approach shot, and 2 putt to capture his first PGA tour win.

The PGA tour moves on to the Farmers Insurance at Torrey Pines in San Diego.  The upcoming stretch of tournaments are very strong, so be sure to check out the action the next few weeks.
